Japanese Aizuchi Guide: Speak Like a Native 💬

Have you ever had a conversation in Japanese where you felt like you were doing great, but the other person seemed a little... uneasy? Or maybe you felt like you were just nodding in silence, trying desperately to think of the next perfect sentence?

If that sounds familiar, there is a simple but incredibly powerful tool that will instantly change how you interact: Aizuchi (相槌・あいづち).

Speaking natural Japanese with friends

In English-speaking countries like Australia, we tend to listen quietly and wait for our turn to speak. Interrupting with "Oh!" or "Really?" too often can sometimes feel a bit rude.

But in Japanese, it’s the exact opposite. Silently listening to someone can make them feel like you’ve tuned out or are bored. Japanese speakers rely heavily on Aizuchi—short, conversational interjections—to say, "I am listening, I understand, and I am completely engaged in what you're saying!"

Let’s look at the most common, natural Aizuchi you can start using today to keep your conversations flowing naturally.

1. Showing Agreement & Empathy (I'm on the same page! 🤝)

How to Practise Aizuchi Without Feeling Overwhelmed 🧠

You don’t need to memorise all of these at once. In fact, trying to force them all into your next conversation might make you sound a bit like a robot! 🤖

Instead, pick just one or two to try out this week.

  • If you are a Beginner: Start with 「へえー」 or 「そうですね」. They are incredibly versatile and fit almost any situation.

  • If you are Intermediate: Try weaving in 「たしかに」 or 「なるほど」 to show you are really digesting what the other person is saying.

Remember: you don't need a massive vocabulary to keep a Japanese conversation alive. Just showing up, smiling, and giving a warm, timely Aizuchi is the fastest way to make native speakers feel comfortable talking to you—and in turn, you'll feel much more comfortable talking to them!
